Further discussion following our February 7; 20061etter to the Division addressed the original Kauffman Pit boundary and acreage.. ~ - It has been previously assumed that the original Kauffman P.it, Permit Number M-78-327, permit boundary included the entire site parcel of approximately 105 acres (see attached Property Boundary Map). It~appears Ghat this assumption has been maintained for many yeazs. In 1988, the~pernut was~arriended to;add 83 acres east of the original property, but no reference to the original permit size ~or boundary has been found in the amendment materials. Technical revisions submitted since the: permit amendment make no, referenca'to the permit boundary or appeaz to assum8, that the original permit included the entire I05-acre site parcel. ,, , ~. Despite previous assumptions, original permit materials from 1978 suggest that the original percitit area included•on1yi58 acres. However, a map illustrating fire actual permit boundary has not `been found in ,the permit materials. It appears, from• further review of the original permit materials„that the perniit boundary only included the post-1978 mining cells proposed at the time of.the permit application:. The azea of the proposed ming cells is approximately 58 acres. Pre-1978 mining had occurred on the site, but it does not appear that. these "pre-law" mining cells, or other areas' of the: site; were• included in the ,permit boundary., .The pre-1978 mining occurred mainly~in:'the southern portion of the site and the proposed post-1978 mining was to occur. mainly in the eastern and northerli areas of the property.. - The larger two groundwater lakes. currently on •the site aze remnants of the post-1978 mined out cells from the original;permit: ,: The .azea of these• lakes and surrounding shoreline is approximately 58 acres,(see attached Original-'1978 Permit Boundary Map).
