Memo to Bruce Humphries -2- April 21, 1992
There is no leak detection system for the tailings impoundment. If an
unsaturated flow occurs which transmits contaminents to the water-taable, the
first indications will be at the down-gradient monitoring wells. Yong-term
monitoring of these wells is imperative, as it appears that a two-Hoot head on
the geo-membrane would result in an increase in sub-soil moisture content that
would lead to unsaturated flow to the water-table. As stated in m memorandum
dated April 14, 1992, a one-foot head on the liner should not result in
exceedence of the specific retention of the impoundment sub-soils alnd
subsequent unsaturated flow to the water-table.
ACS/bjw
Enclosure
2682E
