Canany
Division Director
Natural Resource Trustee
v' /
Re: Pathfinder Pit, Permit M-1994-113, Technical Revision TR-O5, Approved, and Bond Comments.
Dear Mr. Dourlet,
The Technical Revision TR-OS for the site named above was approved on December 12, 2005. The TR includes a
noxious weed control plan, the county-imposed noise berm on the south edge of the pit floor, and the importation of
overburden and topsoil from offsite sources for use in building the noise berm and filling the former wetlands area.
As part of approving this TR the bond amount will be reviewed. During bond review a couple questions came up
about the reclamation details. You had provided a list of species to be seeded, and the group of species was
considered appropriate for the site. However there are no application rates for the species in that seed mix, which
does not allow costs to be figured. Could you please provide the seed application rates?
The slope gradient for the berm was stated to be 1.5:1, though during our onsite discussion we agreed that was too
steep. This is important since the berm is constructed at the edge of the pit floor, above the outslope bordering the
south boundary. With a 1.5:1 slope, eroding, rolling or sloughing material could feasibly impact unpermitted land
immediately outside the permit boundary, a recipe for a possible violation. This is possible even though the lower
slope may be less steep. Please commit to a less steep slope, on both the pit floor outslope and the noise berm
slope.
Upon receiving your responses, I will begin recalculating the bond amount, based on the changes approved in this
TR. It has been several years since the last recalculation, and it is possible that the bond amount will increase.
I may be reached at the Division's Durango field office: 701 Camino del Rio, Room 125, Durango, CO 81301;
telephone 970-247-5193.
Sincerely,
t j~ ~^.
j,/G~~' v ' il~/' ~l,
Bob Oswald
Environmental Protection Specialist
Ec: Hany Posey, DMG
C:\06-01/pathfinder try appr/rco
Office of Office of Colorado
Mined Land Reclamation Active and Inactive Mines Geological Survey
