~ III IIIIIIIIIIIII Ill
999
5 v
State stops gravel crushing
Dolores County is no longer in
the gravel business. The Colorado
Division of Mining has called a
sudden and abrupt halt to county
crushing operations and County
Road Supervisor Tim Huskey says
that's not funny. A cease and desist
order from the State took effect July
18, just days before a contractor was
supposed to set up at the Barley pit
b crush a year's worth of gravel The
penalty for further use of the pit
before appropriate permits aze issued
could be S1,00p px day.
This isn't a problem that arose
overnight, but to the principles
involved, it seems that way. The
County originally applied for and
received mining permits for its
gravel pits, but over the years, those
permits expired. Huskey took the job
as road supervisor just over a year
ago and LeRoy Gore became
commissioner this spring. Both were
surprised when an inspector blew the
whistle, claiming that the County
had both expanded the Bartley pit
well beyond what records showed,
(Corllirttted on papa 12~ -
•
DOVE CREEK PRESS
Dove Creek, CO
(Dolores Counry)
{Corninued from page ~~
and had been operating all its pits
without permits.
It will take at least a month to get
the permits through the state
bureaucracy, even though no one
expects any problems in the
permi[tfng process,
"'Ibis seems to lend credence to
the idea that society has educated
itself to the point of imbecility," said
Commissioner Bill Moffat.
Moffat was serious when he
turned to County AROmey Guy Dyer
and said, "Surely tJrere's somebody
in Denver we can call on this. We
need an exclusion for thirty days or
something."
"I have three miles of road down
there on Squaw Point that I have to
gravel this summer. I suppose they
don't care about that in Denver;' said
Road Superintendent Tim Huskey
"Not one bit,' Dyer replied.
Dyer thought it might be more
productive to try to borrow gravel
from somebody who had a permit
and pay i[ back later. Huskey wasnY
convinced. "Nobody around here has
sandrock," he said.
Plan B calls for research into
laws governing sandrock pits in
Utah. "Maybe somebody in Utah has
a permit we can use," Huskey said.
As far as Colorado is concerned,
the course seems fairly clear; wait
and hope for quick passage of the
pertit.
I~~ ~ L.~s r~~
~cP,t,is~ R ~w (~~ ~ ~ ~,,,4,,,e,
~o Y'~' iw °4'~t.,5
rt><ravei...
