To determine the apparent in place or "wet" density the Troxler
gauge employs an 8 mCI Cesium gamma emitting source coupled with a
Geiger-Mueller scintillometer detector tube. In direct transmission
mode, (Fig. 1) the detector records the amount of radiation
received over a measured amount of time. The amount of radiation
detected can be directly related to the density of the material by
the microprocessor. The gauge is calibrated against a polyethylene
Fig. 1
standard block before every use. These calibration numbers are
tracked and correction factors are adjusted as the source decays.
The in place density readings given by the Troxler are affected
very little by the material being tested as long as the density of
the material being tested lies within the original calibration
range of the instrument. The refuse pit density lies within the
original calibration range. Therefore the in place or "wet" density
readings can be considered as reliable and accurate.
To determine moisture in a sample the Troxler gauge uses a 40 mCI
Americium Beryllium neutron source. Neutrons are not normally
2.
