DO NOT loosen drill rod by tapping from side to side with
Drill rod will turn easier if it is turned every few
inches of hammer penetration.
L. Place source rod in the hose to desired depth of ngasurement.
D. Pull the gauge so the source rod is 1n firm contact with the
side of the hole Coward the front of gauge.
E. Turn the depth indicator to the desired depth. (Each numeral
represents 25 mm ar 1 inch.)
F. Turn the Power/Time switch to the "Normal" - (1 minute posi-
tion).
G. Turn moisture correction switches to "00" or to previously
determined correction factor.
NOTE: On soils [hat have not previously keen checked by a nuclear
gauge, a moisture sample may be obtained at point of test [o
determine if a correction factor is needed. !f a correction
factor is necessary it can be detertriined by following the pro-
cedures in Section VI of this Manual. A correction factor for
a given soil need only be detenni ned once. It can then be re-
used in future testing.
H. Press MEASURE key. In the window display, you will see the
gauge counting and ERR in the upper left hand corner. After 1
minute the counting will stop.
I. Press YD and record the Yet Density (Kg per cubic meter or PCF)
Press M and record the Moisture (Kg per cubic meter or PCF)
Press 00 and record the Dry Density (YD-M)
Press SM and record Percent Moisture (M divided by DD)
On Asphalt
A. Place the gauge on the surface of the asphalt, choosing a
smooth surface for best results. It may be helpful Co place a
soft sand or a powder Such as cement if there are large voids.
tare must be taken to insure that the gauge is resting on the
asphalt and not on the sand. This procedure is only helpful
when the vot ds are Large and the gauge reading is elevated by
doing sa.
B. Place each hantl on opposite corners of the base of the Instru-
ment [o check for rocking.
C. Place source rod in 6ac kscatter position, making sure the
source rotl is in the BS notch and not resting on the asphalt.
0. Turn the depth indicator switch to BS - Bac kscatter position.
E. Turn the Power/Time switch to the Fast (15 second} position or
the normal (one minute).
F. Press MEASURE. In the window display, you will see the gauge
counting and ERR in the upper left hand corner. After 1 minute
the counting will stop.
G. Press ND and read Yet Density.
4. Compaction Readings
A. Press SHIFT and SET and read the stored value. For asphalt,
the Marshall value should 6e stored in this register. Far
soils, the Proctor value should be stored.
B. If the value Ss too law, place the (+/-) switch on (+).
Depress SHIFT and SET and release the SH[FT key. The df splay
value will increase. Release the SET key when [he desired value
is di sDl ayed. If the value is too high, utilize the same
procedure ezcep[ for placing the +/- switch on (-).
On Soil or Base Lourse
Press SHIFT and SPRO and read Percent Proctor (Dry Density divided
by Proctor.
On Asphalt
Press SHIFT and SMAR and read Percent Marshall (Met Density r
divided by Marshall). rp;
-g t
