I am <br />8 president of the Mineral Policy Center. I am <br />9 speaking today at the invitation of the Costilla <br />10 County Committe for Environmental Soundness. <br />11 The Mineral Policy Center is a nonprofit <br />12 national organization based in Washington, D.C. We <br />13 are a public interest group working on tBie control <br />14 and reversal of environmental damage from mineral <br />15 development projects, both hard rock min:~ng and other <br />16 varieties. We were incorporated in 1988 and we are <br />17 recognized as a nonprofit tax-deductible organization. <br />18 The chairman of our board of directors <br />19 is Stuart Udall who served as Secretary of the <br />20 Interior under Presidents Kennedy and Johnson. We <br />21 have a number of members from the mining industry <br />22 and from the other mineral industries. <br />23 We are not an anti-mining organization, <br />24 but we do believe that tight controls on the <br />25 industry are both necessary in the public interest <br />AGREN, BLANDO & BILLINGS <br />rl <br />
