3 being first duly sworn in the above cause,
4 testified as follows:
5 THE WITNESS: Thank you, Mr. Chairman.
6 I appreciate it.
7 My name is Philip Hockey. I am
8 president of the Mineral Policy Center. I am
9 speaking today at the invitation of the Costilla
10 County Committe for Environmental Soundness.
11 The Mineral Policy Center is a nonprofit
12 national organization based in Washington, D.C. We
13 are a public interest group working on tBie control
14 and reversal of environmental damage from mineral
15 development projects, both hard rock min:~ng and other
16 varieties. We were incorporated in 1988 and we are
17 recognized as a nonprofit tax-deductible organization.
18 The chairman of our board of directors
19 is Stuart Udall who served as Secretary of the
20 Interior under Presidents Kennedy and Johnson. We
21 have a number of members from the mining industry
22 and from the other mineral industries.
23 We are not an anti-mining organization,
24 but we do believe that tight controls on the
25 industry are both necessary in the public interest
