USDA United States Natural Resources Simla Field Office
Department of Conservation 504 Wshington Ave
Agriculture Service PO Box 788
(NRCS) Simia, CO 80835
Telephone: 719 541-2358 http:!lwww.co.nres.usda.gov Fax: 719 541-3061
Grass Seeding: Area being reseeded should be treated as a critical area
planting. when area is being reclaimed by broadcasting rather than drilled,
the rates computed shall be doubled to meet seeding recommendations. The
seedbed should be well settled and firm but friable for seed placement. Soils
that have been over-compacted by equipment should be tilled to break up
rooting restrictive layers, then harrowed, rolled or packed to prepare the
required firm seedbed. Grasses should be drilled using a grass drill from
November lsr - April 30`" prior to a period of anticipated moisture and after
all other treatment is completed. Recommended planting depth is y," to '~". See
the attached seeding recommendation (CO-ECS-S) for species amount and variety
to use.
Fertiliser: Manure can be spread on the prepared surface at the rate of 30
tons per acre; or nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer can be applied and
incorporated at a rate of 40 lbs per acre each. Time of application should be
immediately prior to seeding. If nitrogen and phosphorus are applied, a
native hay or straw mulch will have to be spread and crimped into the soil at
a rate of 4000 lbs per acre after fertilizing. Mulch should stick 6" out of
the soil. These measures will help control wind and water erosion until grass
becomes established.
Weed control should be maintained on the site during grass establishment.
Planted sites shall be protected from trampling and grazing until plants are
well established. In heavy-use areas, critical area plantings should be
protected by Fencing or barriers.
No grazing should be allowed until there is a lush stand and none before at
least two growing seasons. Total area to be seeded should include all
disturbed areas.
At the end of two years the success of the seeding should be evaluated. If it
is determined that an insufficient stand of grass is present the area should
be reseeded. If I can be of further assistance please do not hesitate to
contact me.
Sincerely,
~QM~V ,s1.4/4~0~~
Lana K Pearson
District COriSerVat10ri15t
Simla Field Office
The Nalu21 Resources Conservation Service works hantl-in-hand with
the American people re conserve natural resources an private lands AN EQUAL OPPOR7UNI7Y PROVIDER AND EMPLOYER
