The county will not haul or transport any backfill materials from other areas to the
site. The County will only use the available materials that are on site anything
else would be to costly and not needed!
3. In addition to the backfill proposed in paragraph 2, during the late spring and
summer of 2005, the County plans to widen County Road 25 for a distance of
approximately 300'. As currently planned, the road will be widened from its
existing width of about 12' to about 18' directly above the pit and the
current scarping and sloughing area above the gravel permit. The County
proposes that all material removed from above the County road during the
widening project will be bulldozed over the edge of County Road 25 and allowed
to run downhill into the former gravel pit area.
4. The County proposes to excavate a catchment trench and berm along the toe
of the backfilled slope as recommended by the soils engineers. The trench will
be located approximately 30' feet from the toe of the existing slope and will run
essentially parallel to the existing toe of the slope along for approximately 130'
long from the southwestern edge of the original permit area to northeastern edge
of the permit area. This work will be done as close to the specifications and
recommendations in the stability study. The trench will be about five feet deep
and the berm will be approximately six feet high and eight feet wide at the base
of the berm. This trench and berm is designed to catch and stop the larger rocks
that may roll down the slope from the excavated area and above possibly
affecting the surrounding area at the base of the slope and is intended to protect
the public. This work will be done with an excavator/ backhoe and ftont end
loader.
5. The County proposes to back slope and grade all of the northeastern part of
the permit area and a small area outside of the permit area to the edge of CR-2
to eliminate the pre-existing bench roads which had been built by the former
property owner. This back sloping will be done as close to the current slope
angle as possible.
6. The County proposes to correct the permit to reflect that post-mining use of
the land be recreational, vacant land. The original permit erroneously proposed
that the land be revegetated and used for grazing although the rocky makeup of
the soil and the steep slope throughout the area made it virtually impossible to
get vegetation to grow and preGuded grazing. The final use the County now
proposes will return the former gravel pit to a more natural state consisting of
steep, barren rock slope like the surrounding areas. Because of its steep slope,
there will be no public access or use of the slope area. The area at the base of
the slope and the stockpile area and all of the area around the original permit
area will be used for the storage of County equipment and supplies and future
gravel storage (industrial use) and will be closed to any public use.
