• July 9, 198 III III III IIIIIIIIII
sss
RECEIVED
To Members of the Mined Land Reclamation Boards J U L 11 1989
~r bIINED LAY\iJ
I xould like to make a few specific recommendation~rn~~~x'~~~~ OI~ISIQN
to the revegetatlon and reclamation efforts for the Snyder Quaa~ry
Amendment, On June 27, 1989. I talked with Mr, Dsn Hernandez,
of the Mined Land Reclamation Division, Mr, Hernandez suggest~jd
that I contact the Colorado State Forest Service, in Hoodland
Park, to verify that my recommendations xere in general agreem~ant
xith the State Forest Service, Having been a Landscape Archit~:ct
in E1 Paso County for the last six years, I feel that I have a
solid knoxledge of vegetation and xater requirements for vegetation,
Mr, Steve Spaulding of the State Forest Service answered
my call and said that he had a great deal of experience working;
with revegetatlon in the Plkee Peak region, Mr, Spaulding
sugges0ed that due to the hatselconditlons that exist with
predodnately south facing slopes ouch as this site, trees
should be planted on th• average of 8 feet apart, This xould
allow for the natural die off that xould occur after the
reclaiaed area la no longer maintained by the mining company,
With an 8' average spacing, this xould equal approximately
676 trees per acre, The front portion of the benches x111 not
support trees so the number of trees/acre x111 be reduced by
perhaps two-thirds xhich xould be 450 trees/acre, If there are
450 trees "established" per acre when the bond is released,
Mr, Spaulding said that we could expect that only about lO~-20g~
of the trees xould live to oaturit~, say 25 to 50 yearn, Malty of
the trees there today are 200 to 300 years old, Therefore,
of the 450 trees/acre only about 45 to 90 Trill still be alive
25 to $0 years after the bord is released, Mr, Heffner stated
that now there are nppsoxiie.tely 70 to 80 trees/acre,
If the recommendations of the State Forest Service are nos:
followed and a leaser number of trees are planted, say 150 to ;100
trees/acre, than the use of one gallon trees instead of 12"
seedlings should be implemented, One gallon trees 4ave a roott~ell
that is at least 800 larger thm a seedling (231 cubic in,
versus 28 cubic in, for a seedling), One gallon trees xould
