"real" value of anything in a sample. So far, in order to.get reliable
Free Cyanide values, this is part of what we do (per Adrian~Smith):
(a) add CdN03 to each sample in order to precipitate dissol}~ed sulfides;
(the sulfides interfere with WAD analyses);
(b) filter out the CdN03 precipitate;
(c) measure Total Cyanide using a standard method;
(d) measure WAD Cyanide using a standard method;
(e) measure metals;
(f) measure thiocyanate;
(g) assign the metals valves to any of several cyanide spec es depending
on what you know, or assume, about the oxidation tate of the
sampling medium and subtract that from the To al Cyanide
measurement;
(h) subtract thiocyanate interference from the Tonal Cyanide
measurement.
(i) Subtract the Corrected WAD analysis from the Corrected Total
analysis.
(i) Report Free Cyanide.
None of this is standard. It has taken BMG, Adrian Smith, tl~e Division,
Acculabs, Analytica, and Core Labs two months, dozens of samples, II nd years of
Smith's experience to arrive at this method. We will have tr uble enough
training the new sample oversight people, who in turn will have toe plain things
to the objectors, without having to train another lab to run th ngs by this
method. Furthermore, it is hiohly likely that any new lab will ru samples in
the ordinary way. Their analyses will certainly be higher than hose we are
presently getting and when their numbers hit the presses the object rs will find
their socks in a knot, our credibility will come unplugged, and al the time we
have spent on this project so far will look like a coffee break c mpared with
what we may have to do to keep the objectors from storming the min .
In short, without having read the resumes of any other labs, I stro gly suggest
that, provided CORE is EPA certified to run cyanide analyses, we use them for the
independent monitoring. I also recommend that, as a policy, Ind pendent Lab
means Independent Lab for things like this that appear in the off ng. I add,
parenthetically, that I don't believe we should extend this conside tion to the
consulting hydro companies because they are ncl necessarily certifi by anybody
with teeth.
