Exhibit J- Vegetation Information
Wetlands
During the site visit, no wetlands were observed within the Expansion Area North. Much of the
area contains woody vegetation that is indicative of wetlands and riparian areas. However, no
wetland soils or hydrology are present within the Expansion Area North. Some large cottonwoods
and willows were scattered throughout the area. There was little to no recruitment of these woody
species. No herbaceous riparian vegetation existed on the site with the exception of the pond in
the central portion of the survey area. This area is manmade, and because of the sand and gravel
substrate, the area has primarily been colonized by reed canarygrass, willows, and knotweeds.
Little wetland soil development has occurred near the pond. Soils are extremely sandy with little
organic matter. The western and eastern portions of the Expansion Area North had significant
stands of woody vegetation. The western portion was previously a meander of the river. The
eastern portion appears to be a depression that previously held water. $oth of these areas are now
dry due to the lowered water table.
Wetlands do occur along the South Platte River west of the Expansion Area and within a small
area on the southwest portion of Expansion Area South. This vegetative community is designated
as "Wetlands Riparian" on Exhibit J-1 and is dominated by reed canarygrass, willows, and
cottonwoods. No wetlands will be affected by the proposed operation because there are no
wetlands within the Expansion Area North boundary and no disturbances are proposed within the
wetlands at the Expansion Area South.
Weed Species
Below is a list of some of the weed species documented in the Expansion Area and surrounding
areas.
Table J-2 Weed S ecies within the Ex ansion Area
Common Name Scientific Name
Cheat rass Bromus tectorum
S otted kna weed Centaurea maculosa
Lambsquarters Chenopodium album
Blue mustard Choris ora tenella
Poison hemlock Conium maculatum
Flixweed Descurainia Sophia,
Teasel Di sacusfullonum
hlland salt rass Distichlis s icata
Redstem fillaree Erodium cicutarium
Wild licorice Glycyrriza le idota
Kochia Kochia sco aria
Scotch thistle Onopordum acanthium
Prickly ear cactus O untia o[yacantha
Reed canary rass Phalaris arundfnacea
Tumbleweed Salsola iberica
Common mullein ~erbascum thapsus
Yucca Yucca !auto
1898-Frei 1 l2 Eshibits_(4.20.05).doc 7-6
