EXHIBIT I -SOILS INFORMATION
,~ r~~ ~. ~ . _.._,.._
This exhibit provides information on the general soil types, thickness, soil distribution over the
affected land, and suitability of topsoil or growth media at the proposed Expansion Area for
establishment and maintenance of plant growth. Most of the topsoil within the Expansion Area
North has been stripped by historic mining activities.
Soil Types, Thickness, and Distribution
For reference purposes the historic soil classifications for the site are discussed in this exhibit.
The historic soil classifications provide baseline data prior to the soil disturbances from historic
mining activities but are no longer applicable to the site. The U.S. Department of Agriculture,
Natural Resource Conservation Service (NAGS), Status of Soil Survey Digitizing Database
(SSURGO) (NAGS 2003) has mapped the following soil classifications on the existing mine
property and the proposed Expansion Area as shown on Exhibit I-1 and described below:
• Water,
• Gravel Pits,
• Terrace escarpments,
• Dacona Loam,
• Wet alluvial land,
• Arent, Earthen Dam,
• Loamy alluvial land, gravelly substratum, and
• Sandy alluvial land.
Water (W)
There is one area within the Expansion Area North classified as water on Exhibit I-1. This area is
a 3.6-acre pond that was created by historic gravel mining.
Much of the existing permitted mine is designated by NRCS as water. Historic mining activities
on the existing Worthing Pit site have produced three pit lakes, two large pit lakes on the northern
portion of the property (Pit Lakes 1 and 2) and one smaller pit lake east of the residential
properties (Pit Lake 3) as shown on Exhibit C-2.
Gravel Pits (MISLD)
The areas with the gravel pits soil classification on Exhibit I-1 include the southern portion of the
permitted mine and most of the Expansion Area North. These soils are extremely gravelly sand to
depths of 6 inches and very gravelly to extremely gravelly coarse sands from depths of 6 to 60
inches. Prior to mining disturbances, the soils on the eastern part of the existing permitted mine
were Dacona loam and terrace escarpments and soils on the western side were sandy alluvial land
and wet alluvial land (USDA 1974).
Terrace Escarpments (Tc)
There are some soils classified as terrace escazpments within the Expansion Area as shown on
Exhibit I-1. In addition, prior to mining of Worthing Pit much of the soil in the existing
permitted area was classified as terrace escarpments (USDA 1974). Terrace escarpments occur in
7898-Frei I (Z Exhibits_(4.20.05).doc I-1
