Exhibit H-Wildlife Information
White-tailed deer
The CDOW has mapped the entire Expansion Area as white-tailed deer overall range. The
western portion of the Expansion Area was also mapped as awhite-tailed deer concentration area.
No white-tailed deer were observed during the surveys of the Expansion Area. White-tailed deer
may use the Expansion Area although there are few edible species for deer. The operation should
not significantly affect white-tailed deer. The Adams County Park located across the river to the
west provides much better white-tailed deer habitat that could be used during the operation of the
mine.
Elk
During the site visits conducted on March 10 and March 30, 2005, no elk habitat was observed
within or adjacent to the Expansion Area.
Waterfowl
Waterfowl, including mallard and Canada goose, were observed on the South Platte River and on
existing lakes north of the Expansion Area. Waterfowl use these areas throughout the year.
Description of Non-game Resources and Threatened and Endangered Species
Non-game wildlife species that were observed in or near the Expansion Area include: belted
kingfisher, common loon, mallard, Canada goose, great blue heron, ring-billed seagull, double-
crested cormorant, American robin, beaver, cottontail rabbit, and black-tailed prairie dog. Other
non-game species potentially occurring at Ste Expansion Area are threatened and endangered
(T&E) as discussed in the following paragraphs.
The USFWS included a list of T&E species potentially occurring by county in Colorado in its
response to a consultation letter (USFWS 2005). Table H-1 lists the potentially occurring
threatened, endangered, and candidate species listed by the USFWS for Adams County (USFWS
2005).
Table H-1
Threatened, Endan ered, and Candidate Wildlife S ecies in Adams Coun
Common Name Scientific Name Federal Status
Birds
Bald Ea ]e Ha[iaeetus leucoce halus Threatened
Least Tern Sterna antillarum Endan ered*
Mexican S otted Owl Strixoccidentalis lucida Threatened
Piping lover Charadrius melodus Tltreatened*
Whoo in crane Grus ansericona Endan ered*
Mammals
Black-footed ferret Mustela nigri es Endan ered
Preble's meadow jumping
mouse Zapus hudsonius preblei Threatened
Fish
Pallid sturgeon Sca hirhynchus albus Endan ered*
1898-Frei 112 Ezhibits_(4.20.05).doc H-3
