La Plata was assessed civil penalties of 518,250.00 of which
E4,500.00 will be suspended upon obtaining a permit. Joe Carpio of La Plata
Coal fully acknowledged that the activity was conducted without a permit and
indicated to the Board that the civil penalty assessment was appropriate.
However, he also indicated that he may have difficulty paying the civil
penalty within the prescribed timeframe. We will try to work with him on that
problem.
Plata may begin mining operations.
I am pleased to add that La Plata obtained funds and clarification from the
U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the required reclamation bond and was issued a
permit on November 23, 1987. This completes the permitting process and La
\ 423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203-2273 Tel. (303) 866-3567
