P~ABODY
,WESTERN,
III IIIIIIIIIIIII III
999
Peabody Western Coal Company
,~~
^n,
~/.
October 20, 1993 ~C Vii,
c,;,, T22199
Ms. Susan Burgmaier -
Division of Minerals and Geology
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215 ~,
Denver, CO 80203-2273
RE: Seneca II-A Mine Permit C-82-057, NOV C-93-134
Dear Ms. Burgmaier:
The attached information is submitted to comply with Step No. 1
of NOV C-93-134 issued at Seneca II-W Mine on September 24,
1993. Abatement Step 1 required submittal of designs for the
sump, ditch, and berm used for sediment and runoff control at
Soil Stockpile QQ.
Enclosed please find the design information for the sediment
control structures at Topsoil Stockpile QQ. The catchment sump
(QQ-S1) has been designed to totally contain the runoff from a
10-year, 24-hour precipitation event. The calculations
demonstrate the disturbed area (1.4 acres) of Stockpile QQ will
meet the requirements of Rule 4.05.2(3)(a) for small area
exemption (SAE). The location of Sump QQ-S1 is depicted on
Figure 1 and a typical detail is shown on Figure 2. The sump
(QQ-S1) will be reconstructed larger than the design capacity of
0.01 acre-feet (450 ft') to allow for sediment storage. The
catchment ditch (QQ-D1) surrounding the stockpile has been
designed to contain the runoff from a 10-year, 24-hour storm.
The ditch is a v-ditch with lh:ly side slopes and a minimum
depth of 0.5 feet.
Per Abatement Step 2 of NOV C-93-134, the as-built certification
of Topsoil Stockpile QQ Sump QQ-S1 will be submitted to the
Division by October 31, 1993. Exhibit 13-2 and Attachment 13-8
in Tab 13 will be revised to include the design information, as
well as the as-built certification of Sump QQ-S1.
I have also enclosed Tom Wainwright's revised October 13, 1993
letter regarding abatement of Step 2 for NOV C-93-135. Tom's
original letter indicated the abatement applied to NOV C-93-134.
Peabody Western Cool Compony • 100 SwKh Yale Stroef • Flopsfo(f, Arizona 86001 • Tabiphene (604) 774.543 • Fax (604( 77~-43%
