999
Boulder Valley Soil Conservation District
9595 Nelson Road, Box D - Longmont, Colorado 80501
March 7, 1996 RFCEWED
Mr. Greg Squire MAR 111997
Environmental Protection Specialist
Division of Minerals and Geology Diwsior u, ,Yuneid„a
Colorado Department of Natural Resources
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver, CO 80203
REF: AMENDMENT TO PERMIT M-81-302 (DEEPE FARM PIT)
Dear Mr. Squires:
This letter is in response to the above stated request for an amendment to the Deepe Farm Pit
reclamation plan. We have reviewed the submitted materials and offer the following comments.
I. Restoration of the site is critical following such a large land disturbance. It is important
that the proposed plan be implemented as stated. It is vital that the full 6 to 8 inches of
topsoil be placed on the land prior to revegetation. Less than the proposed 6 to 8 inches
of topsoil will likely result in a sparsly vegetated surface similar to other areas
previously vegetated in this mining area. Reestablishment of a wildlife habitat or
agricultural primary future use will be difficult with a sparse stand of grass.
2. Following a visit to the site, it is apparent that there is minimal topsoil available for use
on the land. Will soils be imported to the site? Will the revegetated site be irrigated?
What is the proposed ground cover(seed mix) for the restoration?
3. Establishment of an agricultural and wildlife habitat use will be difficult with a thin layer
of a poor quality soil (rocky, clayey).
It is the recommendation of the Bouldcr Valley Soil Conservation District Board of Directors
that the Applicant be required to place a minimum of 6 to 8 inches of topsoil on all disturbed
areas within the Deepe Farm Pit prior to re-seeding the area with an appropriate seed mix.
Sill rely,
ack Wheeler, President
Boulder Valley SCD
CONSERVATION - DEVELOPMENT - SELF-GOVERNMENT
