REVEGETATION: Revegetation of the disturbed areas will occur in two
i stages. The first stage will be the seeding and establishment of a
i • perennial grass and forb cover using a seed mixture appropriate to the
site and capable of producing fast and thick growth. This is
necessary to create a rapid protection of the site against ierosion.
The seed mixture to be used is as follows:
SNVDER ROADSIDE DISTURBANCES SEED MIXTURE
CBased on a Broadcast Rate)
SPECIES lb/acre seeds/lb seeds/sgft
INTERMEDIATE WHEAT. (SOD) 7 97000 15.59
PUBESCENT WHEAT. Experience has
shown that delaying beyond that period of time results in a reduced
initial growth. Because it is expected the grading and soil placement
will occur during the fall and winter months, the seeding will be done
• in the fall or winter.
The slopes to be seeded are north facing. Therefore, the use of i
'r
mulch would not only be unnecessary but undesirable. A mulch
encourages the accumulation of moisture in the soil which, if j
excessive, can induce slumping. This was a very significant problem
on the Vail Pass highway project where straw mulch was covered with
jute net. This treatment on Vail Pass even induced some degree of
slumping on south facing slopes. Of course here the moisture received '
is far less than is the case on Vail Pass, but the retention of
moisture can still be significant and induce instability in the slope
if mulch is used. 4
The mixture shown above is similar in many respects to ':he
mixture that was applied to the steep, north-facing road cut~a along
the Pikeview Quarry Road. That seeding has been highly succ~sssful
even though the parent material was the growth medium (no soil was
used).
•
Page 5 of 8 SNYDER ROAD CORRECTIVE ACTION PLAN
