1
During the summer of 1992, topsoil was removed below the pond
area to provide for the haul road into the Section 16 pit. Since
the pond area itself does not specifically need to be stripped of
topsoil until 1994 and we wanted to leave this water supply
available for local wildlife populations, we did not disturb the
area any further.
During the winter/spring of 1993, the existing slide area
moved again, however, much of the area affected by the slide had no
topsoil on it as it had been stripped in 1992. Some of the slide
area is disturbance associated with the stockpond and surrounding
area. As such, much of this area is contaminated and saturated
with water.
The Division has indicated that "this topsoil should be
salvaged by July 15, 1993". This deadline may not be praczicai as
1) the area may still be too wet by that date for equipment, 2)
there may in fact be little topsoil to salvage and 3) we would
prefer to leave the pond intact for use by wildlife.
In light of the uncertainties noted above, I would like to
request that we meet with the Division at the slide area to
formulate a general consensus as to what the course of action
should be to correct this area of concern.
Please contact me if you have any questions regarding this
matter. I look forward to your response.
Sincerely,
I/~4y/ GM-v~ V • ~~~"1
1,7~mes A. Kiger
Sr. Environmental Specialist
JAK/gdf
xc: R. G.
