Klein
Administrator
Western Technical Center
U.S. Department of the Interior
Office of Surface Mining
Brooks Towers
1020 15th Street
Denver, Colorado 80202
Dear Mr. Klein:
iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
999
!~ q,
This letter references your letter of June 24, 1982 to Mr. David Shelton, Director,
Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Division, in which you notified him of OSM's
approval of Atlantic Richfield's application to revise OSM Permit No. CO-0021.
This revision application was submitted to the OSM to allow for the drilling of
four coal exploration holes within the Mt. Gunnison five-year permit area. Due to
an internal re-evaluation of the proposed drilling activity, this operation will now
be less extensive than that described in the revision application. We originally
proposed to drill four exploration holes and now intend to drill, within the short
term, only two of those holes. Hole No. 5 described in Exhibit B of our
application will not be drilled and the drilling of Hole No. 4 has been postponed.
Since Hole No. 5 will not be drilled, no new roads will have to be constructed on
Forest Service property. The possibility remains that we may drill Hole No. 4
sometime within the next eighteen months and request that this activity be
authorized under this revision to our permit.
OSM's Stipulation No. L which requires that we conduct a 100% cultural resources
inventory of the area to be disturbed was recently completed for those areas
which we intend to disturb prior to October 1, L982. In the event that Hole No. 4
is drilled at some later date, and is authorized as requested under this permit
revision, all applicable permit stipulations including OSM's Stipulation 1 will be
complied with.
If you have any questions or need any additional information, please do not
hesitate to contact me at 575-7949. I look forward to hearing from you
concerning the extension of this permit.
Sincerely,
7~0-._~~~ .~
Paige B.
