10.2.4. The moisture of the Base Course shall be between -3 and +1 percent of optimum.
11. CULVERT INSTALLATION
11.1. Culverts shall be installed in accordance with the recommendations of the "Handbook of Steel Drainage &
Highway Construction Products" (AISI Handbook), or the applicable specifications of the Colorado Dept. of
Transportation, or the applicable specifications of the Federal Highway Administration.
11.2. The bedding for culverts larger than 36-inches shall be formed with a shallow Vee or the bedding shall be
fine-graded to conform to the invert of the pipe.
11.3. Culvert bedding shall be consolidated in maximum layer depths of 6 inches by 3 passes with a roller or
plate type vibrator.
11.4. The foundation for the bedding material shall be prepared as set forth in Section 7.
11.5. A final layer of the bedding material specified for the culvert in Section 7 shall be placed to the grade that
will result in the specified invert elevation of the culvert.
11.6. After placement and alignment of the culvert upon the bedding layer, an additional layer or layers of
"haunching" shall be installed up to centerline of the culvert, composed of embedment material.
11.7. Upon final check of the culvert invert elevation, a layer or layers of "initial backfill" material shall be placed
to a level 6 inches above the crown of the culvert. When select fill is used for "initial backfill," care must be used to
ensure that no rocks greater than 3 inches of size, and no sharp rocks rest against the culvert.
11.8. CULVERT BACKFILL
11.8.1. Refer to Common Fill section for culvert backfill that is not beneath a roadway or within the areas
designated on the drawings as being backfilled with roadbase material.
11.8.2. Refer to Select Fill section for culvert backfill that is beneath a roadway or within the areas designated
on the drawings as being backfilled with roadbase material. The select fill specification shall apply to all
backfill materials in these areas.
12. GEOTEXTILE FABRIC
12.1. Geotextile filter fabric shall be installed beneath all areas that are to be covered by riprap between the
riprap and the fill material, where the Contractor has chosen not to use riprap bedding material.
12.2. Geotextile fabric shall be installed strictly in accordance with the manufactures published directions.
12.3. Joints in the geotextile fabric shall be made by lapping the material no less than 18 inches or manufac-
turer's recommended lap, whichever is greater.
12.4. Care shall be taken to minimize wrinkles in or bridging of the fabric.
13. FINISH GRADING
13.1. The paved sections shall befine-graded to the grades and elevations specified on the Drawings.
13.2. The pavement surface will generally be drained to the inside drainage ditch as shown on the Drawing
sections, with asix-inch drop in 24 feet, or 2 percent side slope.
13.3. Finish grading of curves will include superelevation with a nominal "e" slope of 0.04 and a Super Runoff of
60 feet, unless otherwise specified.
14. QUALITY ASSURANCE AND TESTING
14.1. The Engineer will perform tests on earth materials at the site to determine if such materials are in
compliance with the respective specified requirements.
14.2. The type and number of tests shall be performed by the Engineer at locations and depth of his choosing.
14.3. Acceptance of earth materials will be made only after such materials have been incorporated into the
SPECIFICATION A EARTHWORK
PAGE 8
