Getches, Executive Director
MINED LAND RECLAMATION DIVISION
DAVID C. SHELTO N, Director
February 25, 1986
Mr. David R. Gossett
Kerr Coal Company
One Tabor Center, Suite 2500
1200 17th Street
Denver, Colorado 80202
Re: Marr Strip Annual Hydrologic Report - Water Year 1985
(File No. C-80-006)
Dear Mr. Gossett:
The Division has recently completed its review of the Marr Strip Annual
Hydrologic Report. The report was found to be very well prepared and was
presented in a manner which facilitated its review. The Division particularly
appreciates the use of hydrographs in the data section of the report.
The Division has the following comments and concerns which Kerr should address
by April 15, 1986.
1. Data from overburden completion Well 79-2 indicates that this well has
lost approximately 20 feet of head between January 1981 and March of 1985.
Well 79-2 is adjacent to the "720" Pit, however, the text indicates that no
inflows to the pit have been observed. Where is this water being lost to if
not the pit?
2. Well DH-4, which was destroyed, may be replaced by an existing well in
the vicinity of DH-4, as proposed by Kerr Coal, provided that the replacement
well is completed in the same stratigraphic unit as DH-4. The Division
requests that the completion data be submitted in order to verify the
placement.
3. Kerr Coal Company should submit to the Division data which confirm the
broken casing of Well 79-26. Specifically, at what depth is the casing
broken, the nature of the damage, and how this damage prohibits sampling.
4. Field data indicates that Well AO-2 was filled in or lost as early as
October 24, 1984. Kerr Coal Company is required to make every reasonable
effort necessary to replace a destroyed well as soon as possible. This well
should have been replaced during the 1985 field season.
423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203 Tel. (303) 866-3567
