JAN-19-99 TUE 14:57 HENDER ON HILL FAX NO. 9707250038 P. 02
i
United States Forest Sulphur P.O.Box 10
• Department of Service Ranger 9 Ten Mile Drive
Agriculture District Granby, CO 80446
(970) 887.4100
File Code: 2720
Date: December 11, 1998
MR ERICH BOWER
CLIMAX MOLYBDENUM COMPANY
HENDERSON MILL
19302 COUNTY ROAD#3
PARSHALL COLORADO 80468
Dear Erich:
Thank you for taking the time today to meet with Patricia Hesch for a review of winterization
work at the Henderson 2000 project. A field review of winterization work was also conducted
by Dave Gloss and Suzanne Layne on Friday, December 4, 1998.
Dave and Suzanne concluded that, with one exception, all winterization needs were complete.
They determined that the downslope side of the water bars at Station 80-85 needed compaction
to keep them stabile through the winter. Patricia checked the waterbars today and observed that
the compaction had been completed. She also noted that one segment of sediment fence in the
• same area had partially collapsed and needed to be re-established. You agreed to have the fence
repaired as soon as possible.
During the 12/4 field review, Dave and Suzanne determined that all items noted in the 11/t7/98
daily diary and the 11/20/98 letter from me, had been addressed and were either completed or in-
terim erosion control measures were in place which would be adequate until all earth work is
completed next spring.
Of specific concern from the diary and letter was the status of work at Station 80-85. Erosion
control measures. including silt fence, straw bales, sediment traps, water bars and seeding, which
Dave and Suzanne felt were adequate to minimize soil erosion until final earth work is complete,
have been implemented in this area. Maintenance of erosion control measures will be necessary
early next spring. It also appears that the COMP recommendation to surface this area with 4-6 in
angular rock will not he necessary. The existing material is comprised of large rock and should
provide a stable surface with minimal erosion. Dave and Suzanne's recommendation is to drop
the requirement for adding 4-6 inch rock and instead require the area to be seeded and install
straw bale sediment barriers at the bottom of the slope, to be left in place after final earth work.
They felt that this would meet the intent of the recommendation in the COMP. Based on their
input, I concur with the recommendation for this change to the COMP.
In a previous discussion, Patricia had told Bryce Romig that berms along thF road at the north
end of the project could be left in place over winter if breaks were put in the berms to allow wa-
ter to run off the road. Breaks have been installed at the cut/fill points, north of STA 130+00,
and the breaks are armored with rock. Sediment fences are installed at the bottom of the rock ar-
• moring.
S
Caring for the Land and Serving People Printed on Recycke Peoe
01-19-99 01 : 57 RECEIVED FROM:9707250038 P- 02
