The purpose of the facilities is to warm the mine intake ventilation air
during cold weather periods. The shaft heaters will be direct fired and use mine methane from Shaft
No. 3 degas pump station.
The construction will occur within existing disturbed azeas (Shaft No. 3 degas pad, Shaft No. 3light-
use road, and the Shaft No. 1 pad). Existing drainage patterns will be maintained during and after
construction.
Electric power will be supplied to the new pump building and control room from the existing hoist
facilities at Shaft No. 1. Conduits will be buried from Shaft No. 1 to the new building.
A 12" HDPE pipeline approximately 2,700 feet long will be fused and buried, approximately 3 feet
deep, from the Shaft No.3 location, in the Shaft No.3 light-use road, across the construction lay-down
area and Shaft No.l pad to the new building.
The pump building will be metal and constructed on aslab-on-grade. Approximately 45 cubic yazds of
concrete will be used to construct the slab. The building will contain approximately four electric driven
40 HP pumps that will deliver fuel to each of the four combustor units. The building will also house
electrical switchgear and controls for operation and monitoring of the heaters.
This facility is expected to operate during the life of underground mining operations. Following
cessation of mining operations the structures and equipment will be removed from the site including
the pipeline. The concrete slab will be demolished and deposited in Shaft No. 1, or transported to the
Refuse Pile Expansion (RPE) area for disposal.
