Karen and Lyle Latvala y' ~ ~~ ^ 1 r 7 7 ~~~1
PO Box 69, 283 High Peaks Ranch Rd. 7
Coaldale, CO 81222 ~~-f7.~i~
April 6, 2007
Division of Reclamation, Mining & Safety
Re: Coaldale Gypsum Quarry
1313 Sherman St. #215
Denver, CO 80203
Cc: Fremont County Planning & Zoning Dept `/
Re: Coaldale Gypwm Quarry ~ „
615 Macon Ave. #210 ,
Canon City CO 81212
Dear Sir or Madam:
We OPPOSE the proposed June re-opening of the gypsum quarry in Coaldale by Holcim,
Inc. Infportant things for you to consider in your decision are:
Environmental damage and pollution:
• Water-use of water in operations taking away from our limited resources; potential
danger to water table an~v1el_I5 critical to our existence in Coaldale; runoff and pollution
into Hayden Creek and Arkansas River
Alr-dust and airborne pollutants; toxic exhaust from equipment; all carried far and wide
by our strong winds.
• Earth-damage to the earth and ugly scars covering a large area; toxic waste piles
Noise-from equipment and blasting (25,000 metric tons!)
Truck traffic-increasing dust, noise and potential for accidents at Hwy 50 and CR 6 and
through narrow canyon on Hwy 50; potential road damage
Wildlife: Noise, blasting and truck traffic will disrupt our plentiful wildlife, not to mention cattle
and poultry farms; potential pollution of Hayden Creek and the Arkansas River affecting fish and
recreational fishing.
Residents:
• Quality of Ilfe-disruption to a VERY peaceful community; when the mine was dosed and
reclaimed a few years ago, we thought it was finished.
Real estate values-who wants to live near a mine?
• Structural damage to homes and wells from blasting
• NO economic benefit to those of us who have [o live with the destruction!
Holcim's environmental record is deplorable, according to pollution watchdogs Scorecard.org
and PlanetHazard.com. PLEASE do not let this company re-open this mine and degrade our
community) 32 years (as proposed) is a ridiculous amount of time-ANY amount of time is too
much when you consider the damage to the unspoiled natural environment we en}oy here.
We trust that you will weigh the damage against the economic gain for Holcim and will DENY
them the permit to re-open and expand this mine. If necessary, we will fight to preserve our
valley from further destruction by this mine!
Thanl~ you, ~` '~
/. ~ ~ ~
, y€
Ka /en Latvala and Lyle Latvala
