The computer modeling
indicates that a leak beneath the center of the tailings dam would
eventually be picked up at monitor wells M-12 and M-13. However;
i*_ appears t}tat it may take as long as 20 years before such a leak
would spread laterally enough to encroach upon these wells. It
continues to be our belief that the monitoring well system would lea
significantly enhanced by the addition of a single monitor well
located near the center of the foot of the tailing dim, between
wells M-12 and M-13. A well located at this point would pick up a
leak from the central portion of the facility much quicl¢er than the
outlying wells, and before the plume had been allowed 1•o spread as
extensively. We believe that this is particularly important now,
since it appears that out of compliance levels of cyanide will be
left in the tailings for an extended period of time.
If yo!t have any questions on these
to contact our office.
lly
., .r.. .-.. ~.. ..
C.P.G 5021
, pl~aSe few-3~Free
cc:
Mr. Maclovio Martinez
Ms. Nora Jacquez
Mr. Dean Massey
- -
Ground Water Hydrology Engineering Geology Geophysics Geotechnical Consultants
January 29, 1993
