Dlrecsor
Michael 6, wng
Divi,lon Dlmcror
The purpose of this interoffice memorandum is to provide you with the results of my review of
stability analysis per your requesk My review consisted of reading the analysis provided and
comparing the circle analysis to one aging SB-Slope Version 3.0, a soft ware program commonly
is use within the Division.
Soil and field (dimensions) parameters used were those supplied by the operator. The analysis
configuration was es described in the Oct-10-97 02:44 Lincoln DeVore of Grd Jct 970-242-1461
p.15 facsimile. Point locations and soil information were as described on page 3 of the facsimile.
The diagram does not correlate completely with the input liwtw In my telephone call of 16 Oct
97 to Bd Morris of Lhtooln DeVora, Mr. Morris stated that he deleted the Soil Typc I in his
analysis, replacing it with soil type I. My analysis has the same substitution. His runs indicate
mitrimum factors of safety of 1.589 and 1.423 ((ieoslope Program). My eaalysis gave a factor of
safety of 1, 565 (SB-Slope Program) .
In my discussions with Mr. Morris, he described the soils as silty, very subject to piping. Tltis_
being the case, the analyses are suspect is That integrity of the soils i9 accepted as fact Care
must be taken in the field to insure the soils are placed and compacted as desired, and no
unforseen geotechnical feature is encountered. A rupture is the compacted Iiner (fmm initial
construction or cleaning activities) may result in piping through the embankment, with potential
for a conduit for drainhtg the pond, and perhaps an embankment failure (erosion or flow failure).
Please cal! me if you have any quest[ons.
cc: Larry Routten
