CSU Extension Service-Las Animas
County. Trinidad Office (719) 846-6881.
SUMMARY AND RESOLUTION OF INTERACTION:Mike returned my call regarding the
expected production of an irrigated smooth brome/alfalfa/vetch pasture vs. the same field
under dryland conditions. After describing the general location, elevation, and irrigation
system of the field he provided the following numbers: Dryland 1-2 T/acre 2T/acre would
be under deal conditions- well managed, adequate moisture, stand in good vigor, high % of
alfalfa to grass. Irrigated 2-3 T/acre. 3 T/acre would reflect very good conditions- good
fertility, good stand vigor, adequate water at proper time of demand, well managed.
Translating this into 60 lb. bales on the 10 acres of Chavez's fields would equate to dryland:
333-666 bales/10 acres Irrigated: 666-1000 bales/ 10 acres. [Mr. Chavez said he'd been
getting 850-950 bales when irrigated (2.5-2.85 T/acre assume 60 Ib. bale)]
I asked about reseeding alfalfa into a pasture. Mike said if you aren't managing for a high
alfalfa production then you'd likely reseed to alfalfa in the pasture on an 8-9 year basis. He
also pointed out that if you don't have a drought resilient variety of alfalfa you may loose
quite a bit of the alfalfa stand from not irrigating for a year. Also dryland production was
down overall in 1995 due to the late timing of the moisture, dry early late rains.
c:\jhb\CSIOI3CT.rsu
