Jim Pendleton
Dir./Tech Srvcs
Mine Land Reclamation Div.
CO Dept. of Natural Reseurces
1313 Sherman St. 2nd Floor
Denver, CO 80203
Dear Dr. Pendleton;
Mined Land
Reclamat;on n;,.,,,;,,~
April 27, 1992
I am writing on behalf of the People's Alternative Ene gy Services
to address their concern, and ours about the Battle M untain Gold
mining ^peration. We feel it is imperative that the w ter quality
issue he addressed and stay on the forefront of the dec Sion making
process.
This year, the San Luis Valley will be center stage fora a number of
State, Federal and academic agencies for the purpose of studying
and documenting water quality. It is no coincidence that an area
like this valley will be getting so much attention. There are many
outside interests focusing on watersheds/water supplied. The value
of water quality cannot be underestimated if we are. to have any
basis for "quality of life" management plans in the f$ture.
If the Battle Mountain Gold Mining operation is end~ngering the
lives of the people and environment of San Luis because of
degradation of water supply, we feel this pro~ectl must stay
responsive to the community it affects and be forced to justify its
current operation,
We want to thank the Mine Land Reclamatior. Divisio for their
hearing and $168,000 fine directed toward Eattle Mount.~in Gold. We
hope this is a beginning to enforce regulations that wi~l determine
effective resource management procedures in the futur$.
S cerely,/~
L,~~2'vvs~- - VI
hrlstine Canaly
Director, Citizens far San Luis Valley Water
cc: Maria Valdez
Peoples Alternative Energy Services

P.0.
