~~~~ •IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII`
SHAV~~G,~ ...,,..."..,--.TION
102 Par Place Suite 4
Montrose, CO 81401
(303) 249-8407
To: Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Board
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver, Colorado 80203 ,~
Re: Ouray County/Dallas Gravel Pit
~S~ICT
October 17, 1995
RFr.,El1/F[?
NOV 15 1995
Division of minerals & Geology
As requested this report addresses the Shawano Soil Conservation
District (SCD) concerns about the proposed operation using information
provided by the Natural Resources Conservation Service (SCS), formerly
the Soil Conservation Service. NRCS made an on-site investigation on
October 16, 1994.
The proposed gravel pits are located on Agua Fria cobbly loam and
Dahlquist extremely stony loam. The Agua Fria cobbly loam can have
enough top soil in places to warrant stockpiling for future reclamation
activities. The Dahlquist extremely stony loam would not have adequate
amounts of topsoil to stockpile.
Present vegetation is representative of the loamy foothills and loamy
slopes range sites. Dominant plant species found on a reclaimed portion
of the gravel pit include smooth brome, orchardgrass, western wheatgrass
and mountain mahogany.
Slopes should be graded to a 3:1 slope where feasible. Where steeper
slopes are unavoidable, terraces should be constructed to trap and
control surface water flows, dispersing erosive energy of these flows to
minimize sheet and rill erosion and prevent gully erosion. Reclamation
should include seeding with adapted grass, forb and shrub species. The
NRCS can assist in developing seed mix's for this site if requested.
If you have any questions regarding these comments please feel free to
contact us.
Sincerely,
~~~,~~~~
Fred Miller
SCD Chairman
