After crossing 19 Road, turn north and travel to the point
where 19 Road crosses 0 Road. Travel west on 0 Road to 18 Road and
then turn north. Continue north on 18 road to the base of the Book
Cliffs and the mine site.
The mine operation is set on a constructed bench cut into the Book Cliffs,
several hundred feet up. The county road ends approximately where
the mine site begins. The steep road up to the mine bench has been con-
structed by Dorchester.
The bench area, apparently cut into the cliffs, contain a variety of
facilities. Minimal construction has gone into the mine office
facilities in this area. Temporary facilities consist of a kitchen,
dining area, mine office and associated facilities; all built from
trailers.
The three portals are large and appear to be permanent in nature.
Large ventilation fans are in place, as are associated ventilation
ducts and supporting structures. The three mine shafts extend 600
and 960 feet into the mountain, approximately to the beginning of
the Cameo coal seams. Some small amounts of coal were stockpiled
on the bench and there is evidence that more coal stockpiles were
present in the past. A shift of approximately five men were working
in the mine, and five additional men were working in the mine office
area. No trucks for hauling coal were at the site, and none were seen
{ on the road.
t
Exploration and development of this mine began in 1976. U.S.G.S. has
not approved an exploration plan for this operation. The State of
Colorado has not issued a permit to operate a coal mine, and the
