The Big Mack Mine is known to have had an influence on the original upgradient alluvial
monitorin, well TR-I during the initial baseline study. This influence is discussed in
Section 2.5.2.5 (page 2.5-67) and resulted in the installation of TR-1.5 as a replacement
upgradient monitoring will. It should be noted that TR-l.> is located downstream of
where TR-1 was located.
TR-1.5 has not been affected by the abandoned mine or underflow from Little Trout
Creek due to the alignment of Trout Creek immzdiately below the Little Trout -Trout
Creek confluence and the spatial relationship behveen TR-1.5, the confluence and
discharge from the Big Mack Mine. Monitorin~~ results from over the past several years
indicates that the mineralized waters in the alluvium along Trout Creek generally flow as
a dispersing plume parallel to the creek with only a slow migration of alluvial waters
towards the "free water" of the creek. Alluvial water (underflow) of Little Trou[ Creek
would be expected to follow a similar flow pattern. Due to the placement of TR-1.5
along the outer portion of the alluvium away from the creek, TR-1.5 was outside the
plume (on the bedrock side) of mineralized flow from Big Mack and underflow from
Little Trout Creek.
When the optical fiber cable was laid during the summer of 1995, its alignment was
downstream of Count}• Road 27 along the downstream edge of the alluvium common to
Little Trout Creek and Trout Creek. It is belizved that the activities associated with
laying the cable has altered the plume from zither the Little Trout Creek underflow and/or
the Big Mac Mine discharge as they migrate toward Trout Creek to the extent that this
flow now exerts an influence on the alluvial water collected at TR-1.5.
=1. During the lust midterm review. P&rLl committed to revise the permi[ after DA1G's review
of the 1999 AHR. Please submit a !ethnical revision to address those outstanding items
addressed in our January .i. 2000 letter. Irr the revision, please inchrde n revised Water
rLlonitoring Location tLlap (Exhibit -J.6-26) to include the location of DMP007.
Responses to the other comments in this letter can be addressed in a respatse letter.
A Technical Revision (TR-39) has been submitted under cover letter dated August 11,
2000, addressing the outstanding items from the noted letter and includes a revised
Exhibit 4.6-26.
