• Micro-seismic Monitoring Proaram Historv
The requirement for a seismic study grew from concern that underground
coal mine generated seismic activity may impact the Bruce Park reservoir.
In order to have a meaningful discussion on this issue a conference was
organized and presented in Paonia. Those invited were the Terror Creek
water users, Forest Service and BLM personnel, Delta county officials,
members of the North Fork Coal Working Group and other interested
parties. Presenters at the conference were Agapito and Associates
speaking on rock mechanics, Greg Hunt, Bowie geologist on the geology
of the area, Neil & Associates of Golden Colorado, on cross-hole seismic
studies, Jim Norfleet, Colorado Dam Safety engineer, and Pete Swanson,
NIOSH.
Pete Swanson was invited because he had recent experience with a
similar situation in Utah, specifically the Joe's Park dam in Orangeville.
Here, an underground coal mine was looking at mining very close to the
dam. His role in the Joe's Park dam was to look at the potential seismic
shaking of the dam structure.
i ~ After Pete's presentation there was a question session. In response to one
question concerning seismic energy delivered to the reservoir, Pete
indicated there would not be much to measure until mining got within a
mile of the reservoir. It was from this comment the one-mile limit was born
and later incorporated into the Iron Point lease as a special stipulation,
Pete Swanson agreed to help Bowie design and install a seismic network,
which would capture the seismic activity generated by the mine. Pete
also introduced Bowie to Bob Huzak, engineer for GEI. GEI was involved in
characterizing the Joe's Park dam. Bob's group was hired to investigate
the Bruce Park dam, its construction and its ability to withstand seismic
events, They drilled the dam to investigate it and wrote a report on their
finding.
•
