Lang
Division Director
The Division received your letter dated August 24, 1999 in which you forvvarded
several comments about Permit Revision No. 2 (PR-02) for the Bowie No. 2
Mine. As discussed at the August 5 informal conference regarding PR-02, the
Division must respond to comments received following the informal conference
and then, issue a proposed decision on the PR within 60 days of the conference.
This letter includes responses to the comments in your letter. Your comments
are repeated below in italics and the Divisions responses follow.
WSERC asked if the proposed permit revision would affect net water
consumption in the North Fork of the Gunnison River.
Bowie Resources Ltd. (BRL) revised the water depletion estimate in the mine
permit to reflect estimated consumption resulting from longwall mining at the
production rate of 2 million tons per year. BRL estimates consumptive use of
102.6 acre-feet per year. When the Bowie No. 2 mine permit was originally
issued and prior to initiation of mining in 1997, BRL estimated that water
consumption would occur at a rate of 124 acre-feet per year. So, net water
consumption at the Bowie No. 2 Mine should not increase as a result of PR-02.
