Todd, Senior Staff Ecologist
(303) 234-9020

Background and Description
The Climax Mine (Figure 1), located at the summit of
Fremont Pass (elevation 11,318 feet) on the Continental
Divide, is a large molybdenum mine which has been in
production operation since 1918. The mine and its ancillary
industrial and milling facilities and related operations
extend below Climax within the drainages of the East Fork
Arkansas River, East Fork Eagle River, and the South Fork
Tenmile Creek.
Colorado State Highway 91 passes through and connects
the Climax property to the town of Leadville (13 miles south)
and the town of Frisco (18 miles north). The ski resort of
Copper Mountain is located at the intersection of Highway 91
and Interstate 70 approximately 10 miles north of the mine
site. The Climax Mine site includes approximately 11,600
acres of contiguous land within the Colorado counties of
Eagle, Lake, and Summit.
The Climax Mine can, at its discretion and depending
upon economics at a given time, produce molybdenum disulfide
from molybdenite ore from either an open pit and/or an
underground operation. Production rates may vary (again
depending on economics) from less than 6000 tons per day to
more than 48,000 tons per day. After milling, processing,
and the removal of the product, the remaining waste material
or tailing is transported in a water slurry via tailing
