Review of Abatement #'8 Response
August 4, 1993
Page 7
SUMMARY:
The interstitial (liquid) component of the tailings that were depc~eited before
cytox was applied have not been adequately sampled.
The logical premises for leaching the tailings with simulated rainwater rather
than rainwater plus sulfuric acid needs to be explained. seuming the
explanation ie satisfactory, I see no reason for further leach to te.
The acid/base accounting testa show a net positive acid production p~tential over
acid neutralization potential. Whether this will produce a high ate of acid
production under the environment that will prevail following closurl needs to be
explained.
The accelerated weathering testa produced a few metals concentrati ne exceeding
surface water standards for the Rio Grande River. These result need to be
explained in context of the environment that will prevail following losure. The
Division needs certain assurance that surface water which will f ow over the
tailings following closure will not produce surface or groundwate that cannot
meet surface and groundwater standards.
cc: Mike Long
Jim Pendleton
Bruce Humphries
Jim Stevens
M:\MIN\HHP\BMGAEW .MEM
