_~
INTRODUCTION
In July 1995 Metcalf Archaeological Consultants. Inc. (MAC) of Eagle.
Colorado conducted a Class III cultural resource inventory for Cyprus Empire
Corporation of Craig, Colorado. This study consisted of approximately 13,500
feet of 300 foot wide seismic line corridor known as the 956 seismic line. eight
drill hole sites and about 8,400 feet of access corridor. This study was
reported in July 1995 (Spath 1995a). An earlier addendum to this report was
submitted in August (Spath 1995b) and dealt with a prehistoric site which is
within the seismic line corridor. This site was discovered during a block survey
being conducted for Cyprus Empire. The report for this block survey has not yet
been submitted.
This addendum (#2) covers two additional proposed drill site locations.
PEDS-6 is located in the NW/NE/SW of section 18 T6N, R92W and PEDS-8 is in the
SE/SE/NE of the same section in the 6th Principal Meridian, Moffat County,
Colorado (Figure 1). There is existing access to both drill sites which was not
inventoried for this project. A block measuring 300 feet to a side was
inventoried for cultural material surrounding both center stakes. A total of 2
acres was surveyed for this project.
The investigation was conducted on August 18, 1995 by MAC archaeologist
John M. Scott. The project area is located on lands administered by the Bureau
of Land Management, Little Snake Resource Area. It was performed under BLM
Permit #C39290 which expires 9/22/95. All field notes, photographs and maps are
filed at the MAC office in Eagle, Colorado.
The previous report covered the same environment, file search and statement
of objectives. Since these sections were covered in that report they will not
be reiterated here.
FIELD METHODS
An intensive pedestrian survey methodology was used to conduct this
investigation. The survey blocks were covered utilizing a series of parallel
pedestrian transects walked at approximately 15 meter intervals. Both drill
sites are found within agricultural fields with around 80~ vegetation ground
surface coverage. The vegetation cover was predominantly wheat grasses, thistles
and weeds. Special attention was paid to areas of enhanced subsurface
visibility, such as eroded areas, rodent backdirt piles, road cuts and animal
trails.
RESULTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
No cultural material was encountered during the inventory of the proposed
PEDS-6 and PEDS-8 drill sites. Based on the size of this study area these
results were pretty much what was expected.
