crosting, or salt precipitation is occumng as a result of irrigation. If these problems do arise irrigation is
discontinued and (1) the imgation system is adjusted and/or (2) fitting mitigation measures, if necessary, take
place. At no time are the reclaimed soils allowed to exceed field capacity upon/during application of irrigation
waters.
Irrigation records are kept at the mine to track application rates of imgation waters on reclamation parcels.
Once the application rates shown in the imgation schedule (Table 906.B(5)-4 (Imgation Schedule)) are
achieved, irrigation is discontinued. These records are available at the mine for review by MMD inspection
and permitting staff.
Table 906.(5).4 Irrigation Schedule
Growin Season Irri ation Levels Duration
First 1 to 2 inches depending on Initial Application to get
soil e and de th Soil Profile wet
First 0.5 inches Every 2 to 3 days for 1st
four to 6 weeks following
initial seedin .
1.0 inches I Every week for the duration
of the owin season.
Second 1.5 inched Every 5 weeks throughout
the owin season.
I Rate maybe reduced depending on precipitation levels and temperatures.
Dave Clark
NM MMD
505-476-3416
david.clark(a~state.nm.us
From: Mathews, Dan [mailto:daniel.mathews@state.co.us]
Sent: Wed 12/14/2005 12:14 PM
To: Clark, David, EMNRD
Subject: Irrigation for establishment
Hi Dave,
I thought I would run this by you, as you probably have more experience with it at a couple of the
mines down there than we do. We have a coal mine out by Nucla along the San Miguel River in the
far western hinterlands, which has only recently come under my purview. Most of their mining is in
irrigated pasture and alfalfa and their primary reclamation is directed to those uses. But they have
some incidental areas of dryland pasture. They are in a 10-11 inch annual precip zone, and they
have historically irrigated their dryland areas (sprinkler system) for the first few growing seasons for
establishment, because they experienced some seeding failures years ago on some dryland
12/14/2005
