PREDICTED TAILINGS GEOCHEMISTRY
During laboratory-scale treatability studies, samples of INCO SO,/Air treated tailings were cdlected
and analyzed. The purpose of the testing program was to evaluate whether the INCO SOz/Air
process would change the geochemical nature of the tailings over that currently permitted. Tests
performed incuded static acid generation potential/acid neutralization potential (AGP/ANP),
leachability using U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Method 1312, and humidity cell tests.
Static AGP/ANP data for the INCO S0,/Air detoxified tailings are Included In Table 2. Also included
in Table 2 are data for two tailings samples analyzed In 1989 using similar methods. Samples tested
in 1989 consisted dcarbon-IMeach type tailings. The samples were generated by Battle Mountain
Resources, during bench-scale leaching tests (Steffen Robertson and Klrsten, 1990b).
TABLE 2
COMPARISON OF INCO SO,/AIR TREATED TAILJNGS
AND UNTREATED CARBON-IN-LEACH TAILINGS
Parameter INCO/SO,
Treated Tailings' CIL Tailings' CIL Tailings'
Total Sulfur (%) 1.28 2.82 2.79
Pyritic Sulfur (%) 1.02 1.73 1.56
Sulfate Sulfur (%) 0.29 0.02 <0.01
AGP' [Total Sulfur] 40.0 88.1 87.2
AGP' [Pyritic Sulfur] 31.9 54.0 48.9
ANP' 6.3 1.8 7.6
Core Laboratories, Inc., 1992a.
Core Laboratories, Inc., 1989.
