'~
Erosion Management Corrections Pikeview Quarry (M-77-211)
Road cut repair:
Cause: About the time the permit for this operation was issued in 1980 a new
access road was planned. Rather than following the valley alongside the drainage course from
the quarry, the new route would cut across the hillside and then descend to the valley.
Considerable progress was made th constructing the road, but the work had to be stopped
because of a housing development being constructed in the valley. An entirely new route (the
current route to the quarry) was constructed as part of the 1982 amendment. Most of the cuts
to create the road that had to be stopped have been reclaimed. The cuts you note are the
remnants of the original cuts. They do not produce any severe problems and have not
expanded uphill through headword erosion. But their presence clearly indicate incomplete
reclamation.
Correction: The cuts will be removed through a combination of cutting and
filling. Cutting will involve removing some of the vegetation and soil upslope from the
vertical road cuts. This will also help produce a fresh binding surface before placement of the
soil. High quality soil containing woody material will then be placed into the regraded cut and
shaped. The soil will then be seeded with the same mixture used in the reclamation of the rest
of the old road route. This work will be completed well before June 9 as a seeding that late
would probably not be very successful due to the south facing aspect.
Page 2
