Township lOS Rmtge 96N 6ib Prime A•feridinn
Received
JUNE g199g
Divi~b~ o~M e!~ Oryeo
My wife and I recently purchased acreage nearby to the proposed expansion of the above gravel pit and have just
recently built our new home on our site. A major motivation for purchasing our property was the quietness and
serenity of the area East of Mesa. We look upon this proposed commercial expansion as a challenge to our basic
reasons for building where we have built and a direct threat to our ne•.v home value.
We have taken the time to look into the matter and have reviewed conditions of the original (rrst issued) permit and
see that Nichols Gravel Pit never fulfilled the buffering condition of this original permit. This is a clear permit
violation. As neighbors, i[ is no[ unreasonable for us to have concerns that these and possiblz other imposed
conditions would also be ignored by Nichols Gravel Pit Consequently, we are asking for Mesa County to conduct
a "Full Reviex~" of this matter.
I have found over the years that matters like this one seemingly ignore some of the more meaningful issues and lack
bout consideration and common sense. Our particular driveway access to KE Road is just a short distance from the
blind curve entrance to the existing small gravel pit. The proposed expansion of the existing small operation to 67
acres borders insanity. KE Road was never meant to conduct the flow of just the automobile traffic it now does.
My wife and 1 risk our lives just trying get out onto KE Road from 51.1 Road with the existing traffic. We're also
on one of the numerous blind curves on KE Road. I shudder to imagine the impact and outright danger of 60+
loaded dump trucks moving onto and then up and down KE Road daily.
Since part of [he reclamation plan includes the creation of a lake to be filled with water from a well, which is also to
be used for dust control, as neighbors with domestic water concerns, we would want to see the results of a full blown
environmental impact study addressing possible depletion of the surrounding water tables. We would also like to
consider the datttage to surrounding properties likely to be incurred as a result ofdust emissions.
Commercial pollution of this aria would be a disgrace. Deer and wildlife abound here. There are few places
remaining in the County where you can drive by any evening and enjoy entire herds of deer grazing in the fields.
Such is common place concerning the lands surrounding this proposed expansion site. Please, let's conduct a Ftr/l
Renew of this matter and give those of us who havz se much to lose the opportunity to team from independent
experts the impact of this proposed expansion.
Sincerely,
Richard C.
