As this cut was filled with CKD/sludge and mining wasteJoverburden the well casings were <br />extended to maintain access from the surface. As part of this investigation RGI evaluated the utility of <br />these monitoring wells as sources of additional data This evaluation was conducted during the measuring <br />of water levels, and during well development and sampling. The measurement of water levels resulted in <br />varying water level elevations between the wells that did not reflect a consistent gradient across the area. <br />During subsequent well development activities an attempt was made to lower athree-inch diameter bailer <br />down each of the four (4) wells to clean and redevelop each of the wells. In each of the wells the bailer <br />could not be lowered beyond a few tens of feet due to the misalignment of the well casing resulting from <br />the numerous casing extensions added to the original wells as Cut 6 was bacld'illed. Finally, a Bound <br />water sampling pump was lowered down one (1) of the wells in an attempt to collect a Bound water <br />sample for analysis. However, when the pump was started the intake became clogged with rust and other <br />debris in the well. Based on the results of these activities it appeazs that these wells are not suitable for <br />cotlecting reliable ground water quality and elevation data and should be abandoned in accordance with <br />State regulations. <br />3.6 CKD/Sludge Sampling <br />CICD/sludge samples were collected for leach testing on September 11, 1998 and submitted to the <br />laboratory along with the ground water samples discussed below. The purpose of the leach testing was <br />to evaluate what constituents of the CKDfsludge mixture could potentially be leached out either by ground <br />water flowing through the material or rainfall infiltrating through the materia! to the ground water. <br />Samples were collected using glassjars to collect material recently (i.e., within less than two hours) placed <br />in the landfill area. In collecting the samples care was taken to get a representative sample of both the <br />CKD and the sewage sludge in the approximate proportions in which they are placed in the landfill. <br /> <br />
