The
proposed liability release area, as delineated on Map 1, does not include any alluvial valley floors,
croplands, or prime farmlands. Table 1, Eagle No. 5 Mine - I.iabiliry Release Areas, provides a legal
description of the subject lands.
~: ,~ _-. Conversations with individuals familiar
with the 5 Mine operation indicate thaz the combination of geologic condition and a massive
competeru overlying sandstone unit resuhed in very good roof conditions during mining, limiting
regturemems for roof bohing and other ground control measures. Given thaz the western portion of
the 5 Mine was developed and operated during the eady 1970's through the earl}; to rrrtd-1980's,
current subsidence evaluation and monitoring requiremerns were not yet in place. Conequently, little
or no subsidence documentazion is available for this area. Based, however, on both historic
description and recent visual inpection, little or no vistble surface subsidence haz occurred over the
5 Mine western worlflngs.
Normally, surface subsidence associazed with underground coal mines occurs within 3 months w 3
years of undermining, with little or no subsidence occurring after 5 years. In this case, little or no
surface subsidence has been observed over the 5 Mine western worlangs; no mining has occurred in
this area in approximately 19 years, and a is approximately 14 years beyond the nom~al maximum
period for subsidence to occur.
B7TlE»1Sre Corporauo: * 29515 RQt 27 Ckk Gak, Gt780467 *(970f 8741712
-- ... ~__...,_,~.n~.__~,, Reusel-Jmarary200S
