~.
~,
-2-
affected the groundwater being monitored by these wells.
Since Snowmass is not planning to operate these mines in
the near future, there is no chance that we will impact
this water.
Refuse Pile Wells D-lA and D-2A:
Snowmass proposes to cease all field and laboratory moni-
toring of these two wells. Well D-2A is a control well
that monitors the alluvial water near the refuse pile.
This well is outside of the refuse area and not affected
by the refuse pile. Well D-lA is directly below the
refuse pile.
Data from these two wells has been obtained since September,,
1980. When the water quality contained in the 1984 and ~.
1985 annual hydrology reports is compared to the pre-permit ~ ~
water quality data, it is apparent that the refuse pile is
having no measurable affects on the alluvial groundwater.
Reclamation Specialist, Joe Oliver, agreed with this state-
ment in his hydrology review letter dated May 8, 1985. -
Since all data shows that the refuse pile has not impacted
the local alluvial waters and Snowmass does not plan to
place any more refuse material on the pile in the foreseeable
future, it should not be necessary to monitor these wells
any more.
Mine No. 1 and No. 3 Discharges:
These discharges will be sampled monthly only as required
by our NPDES Permit. Snowmass proposes to cease the full
quarterly analysis. Since Snowmass began full sampling of
these discharges on a quarterly basis in 1982, there has
been no significant change in any of the chemical parameters
(see annual hydrology reports). Also, with no mining in
progress, there is no chance for the mine water to change
in quality.
Upstream and Downstream North Thompson Creek:
Snowmass will continue to monitor flow and those same
parameters that are monitored for the mine discharges.
Upstream and Downstream Middle Thompson Creek:
Snowmass will continue to monitor these sites as outlined
in our current permit.
Snowmass feels that this proposed plan will adequately monitor the water that
may be impacted by our idle mining operation.
