1 Local Geology, Groundwater and Drainage
United Companies, Inc. Norwood Pit is located on a high plateau
on the southwest flank of the Uncomphagre Plateau between the San
Miguel River and its associated canyon and Naturita creek and its
' canyon. Maverick draw drains the central portion of the plateau
trending to the northwest. The slope of the gravel pit area is
generally flat on top of a bench above the San Miguel River,
which is located approximately 900 feet below in the canyon to
' the northeast. The slope of the south west side of the pit
grades slightly downward to Maverick Dra w at about 2 degrees.
' The bench has an elevation differential of about 40 feet from
southwest to northeast at 7240 - 7280 feet above sea level and is
classified as semi-arid.
'
The Norwood Pit site primarily drains into the Nelson Ditch, with
' lesser amounts probably reaching the San Miguel River and
Maverick Draw. There is no flood potential on the property. The
' currently operating pit in Phase I has been mined 50 feet below
ground level and with no groundwater being found. There is no
' intention to mine deeper than 50 feet in the proposed future
Phases II - IV.
' Observations were made on the cut faces of the existing pit, as
well as, the rest of the mentioned property in order to obtain
' information on the depths of the soil layers and their
characteristics. The east end of current mining in Phase I has
' approximately 10' of unconsolidated fill material which is
composed of the natural overburden material described below.
' Following the fill materials is 4" of greenish brown well-graded,
rounded, sand and gravel. This material is understood to be the
remnants of natural fines from an asphalt plant located in the
' area in the past. The natural ground level contains 6" of dark
reddish brown silty clay with fine sand, which contains fractures
' making it blocky, is stiff to very stiff, and is slightly moist
to dry. The natural overburden material is present form 6" to 3'
' 6
