Gibbons
Director
Moffat County Planning Department
221 West Victory Way
Craig, Colorado 81625
RE: Marathon Gold Corporation, Permit No. 83-52
Dear Mr. Gibbons:
As specified in our correspondence to you of November 21 , 1984, the above
referenced site was inspected by the Division on November 30, 1984. Based on
this inspection, the Division believes there is "Reason To Believe" that there
are violations at this site and will be bringing Marathon in before the
governing Mined Land Reclamation Board at the January 23-24, 1985 meeting.
The items the Division believes is in violation of Marathon's mining and
reclamation permit are listed below.
1 . The operator is using cyanide on the site but there is no provision for
such activity in their permit.
2. The operator is still trying to accurately locate the resource via
digging numerous pits around the area and is not following the approved
mine plan.
3. The operator is to slope the topsoil stockpiles to 3h:ly grade and seed
them, which has not been done to date.
4. The operator has developed four impounding structures but there are
provisions in the permit for only three such structures.
The Division has specified the operator needs to submit an amendment to the
current permit to more accurately reflect the activities currently being
done. This amendment is to be submitted by Marathon no later than
Feburary 1 , 1985.
One of the major concerns raised in your letter of October 25, 1984, pertained
to reclamation activities in the event the operator goes out of business. The
Division currently holds a financial warranty in the amount of $26,000 for
423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203 Tel. (303) 866-3567
