baze-root, slips, and 1-gallon plant materials are best adapted to
reclamation efforts as the young plant's energy is directed into
establishment of the root system as opposed to top growth. Also, plants
grown in nursery conditions for long periods of time struggle to adapt to
the growing conditions of a restoration site, thus the mortality rate of larger
plant material is very high. Five gallon containers will only be specified if
young plant material of some species is not available at the time.
Soil Preparation Guidelines
Wetland Topsoil
Where possible, wetland topsoil containing plants, seeds, roots, and rhizomes will
be excavated in existing wetlands disturbed by mining. Wetland topsoil shall be
placed in new wetland areas of the same type as those disturbed. The relocation site
will be prepared prior to excavating the wetlands. If this is not possible, the wetland
topsoil will be stockpiled until the relocation site has been prepared. Wetland topsoil
will be stockpiled separately from upland topsoil and other materials. Storage time
within the stockpile will be as short as possible. Wetland topsoil material will be
placed in new wetland azeas to a minimum depth of 4 inches, and a maximum depth of
18 inches.
Upland Topsoil
Where possible, the top 6 inches of soil in existing uplands disturbed by mining
will be excavated and stockpiled separately as upland topsoil. Upland topsoil will be
spread on all disturbed azeas above the anticipated high water line. Upland topsoil
will be keyed to the underlying and surrounding material by the use of harrow, rollers,
and other equipment suitable for the purpose.
Fertilizer
Fertilizer will be applied in all dryland seed zones. No fertilizer will be applied in
wetland and riparian zones. Fertilizer will be triple superphosphate (0% N, 46% P,
0% K) applied at a rate of 150 Ibs/acre.
Western Mobile Lyons - Rockin' WP E-5
