Tree and Shrub Planting
The plan for planting trees and shrubs addresses three distinctly different
reclamation azeas:
Reservoir Shorelines
These acres will be planted in the appropriate hydrologic zones as shown in the
Open Lake and Reservoir Reclamation concepts.
Uplands
Planting clusters on sideslopes of the Open Valley will likely contain seeps, given
the current flow of ground water on this site. Exact locations of these planting
clusters will be determined by the location of seeps following mining; however, the
quantity of plants specified will be adhered to.
Open Valley
In the Open Valley azea, the successful establishment of trees, shrubs, and
herbaceous wetlands relies on the hydrologic conditions, which will be apparent upon
final grading. Woody vegetation is most easily established in azeas which will be
backfilled primarily with silt fines. In azeas backfilled primarily with topsoil, upland
and wet meadows will establish most easily. Vaziations in hydrologic conditions that
aze appazent after fmal grading should determine the placement of seed mixes,
plantings, and harvested wetland soils. Thus, in order to ensure successful
revegetation, as in any constructed wetlands, a "design-build" approach is needed.
The inherent flexibility required in the Open Valley reclamation approach severely
limits the ability to realistically identify specific planting locations beforehand.
In order to establish a goal for planting and for monitoring the success of
reclamation in the Open Valley azeas, however, tables of plant species and quantities
for each phase and the pods contained therein has been developed (see Tables 1-3).
As at the reservoirs and upland azeas, trees and shrubs in the Open Valley will be
planted in species groupings for a naturalistic appearance.
Western Mobile Lyons - Rockin' WP E-10
