DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
David H. Getches, Executive Director
MINED LAND RECLAMATION DIVISION
DAVID C. SHELTON, Director
Richartl D. Lamm
Governor
DATE: October 2, 1986
T0: Steve Renner
FROM: Tom Gillis~~~
RE: SENECA II PERMIT RENEWAL - DRAFT BACKFILLING 8 GRADING FINDINGS
Based upon the results of our September 30, 1986 meeting with representatives
from Peabody Coal Company, I have prepared a set of drafting findings for the
backfilling and grading section of the permit renewal decision document.
These findings should be reviewed closely by Mike Savage prior to finalizing.
XVII. Backfilling and Grading - Rules 2.05.3(b), 23.05.3(9), 2.05.4(2)(a
Information pertaining to backfilling and grading is presented in Tab
12 of the permit renewal application. Exhibits 12-1 and 13-2 show the
current and proposed post-mine configuration of the pit areas. Exhibit
12-9 of the original application also depicts proposed post-mining
contours.
Surface coal mining operations at the Seneca II Mine are conducted in
two areas, depending on the particular coal seam{s) being mined.
Mining operations at the Wolf Creek pit area will be conducted in
portions of the S1 /2, S1/2 Section 36, T6N, R87W, N1/2 and SW1/4
Section 1 and the SE1/4 NW1/4 and E1/2 W1/2 Section 2, both in T5N,
R87W. The Wadge pit areas, divided into the Wadge East and Wadge West
pits, are generally located in the SE1/4 Section 11 and the N1/2
Section 12, T5N, R87W, respectively.
Wolf Creek Area
On September 25, 1984, the Division approved a permit revision for the
Seneca II Mine which allowed a change in the mine plan for the Wolf
Creek pit area. The Division findings regarding the backfilling and
grading aspects of the permit revision have been incorporated into this
findings document and revised as necessary to account for the
resolution of stipulations attached to the permit revision approval.
The proposed mining in the Wolf Creek permit revision area was found to
result in the generation of excess spoil as demonstrated in table 12,
Calculations indicated that between 1,855,000 yd3 to 2,380,000yd3
423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203 Tel.
