~,
~,
If there are no objections from the landowners, the Division will approve the proposal to
reduce the vegetative cover and diversity standard, and the proposal to delete the woody
plant success standard. It would not be reasonable to expect a significant establishment of
forbs on the mine site after eight years of herbicide application aimed at leafy spurge
eradication. The disturbed area is small enough, and the spurge problem large enough, that
weed control should be a higher priority than establishment of forbs on this site.
The same factors make establishment of woody plants on the mine site very unlikely.
Establishment of small grassy areas in the midst of hundreds of surrounding acres of shrub
land probably increases the value and diversity of the area as wildlife habitat. Based on
observations of the site in recent years, it is obvious that deer and elk are using the site very
heavily.
The Division's decision due date for this revision is October 25, 1996. Please respond to
these concerns prior to this date. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call.
Sincerely,
C~~ ~'
Erica S.
